What is WTI Crude Oil?

By dictionary definition, WTI (West Texas Intermediate) is a high-quality, low-sulfur light sweet crude oil produced in the Western Texas region of the United States. Along with Brent and Dubai crude, it is one of the three major global oil price benchmarks.

Risks of Oil Trading and How to Solve Them

Generally, oil is traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). Since one contract equals 1,000 barrels, the total value per contract is enormous, and the required margin is very expensive. This makes it a risky venture where a single trade could potentially lead to massive debt.

For this reason, there has long been a saying: "Don't touch oil." But what if we could trade with a very small amount, without a huge margin, and in a structure where you don't end up with debt?

The solution is CFD (Contract for Difference) trading. However, since the conditions for CFD trading at domestic brokerages are very strict—requiring a margin of over 100 million KRW and professional investor status—using an international exchange is the most effective method.

While there are several exchanges I recommend, the one I suggest most is Gate.io.

First, they offer a vast range of tradable products. When trading Crude Oil, you can use up to 500x leverage, allowing you to start trading with as little as $10. While most CFD platforms require about $200, the fact that you can start with just $10 on Gate.io is a huge advantage.

However, if your margin is too low, the position may be liquidated even with a tiny price movement. Therefore, it's better to use at least $50 per trade.

If you trade with a small amount, even a small tick movement can result in a high return rate, as shown below.

Step-by-Step Guide to Trading WTI Crude Oil on Gate.io

If you have completed the registration and deposit using the methods described above, you are now ready to trade.

1. On the Gate.io main screen, click TradFi, then select XTIUSD.

2. Click the chart or the Trade button at the bottom to go to the trading screen.

3. Click Buy or Sell on the chart. Note that short positions are available, so you can sell even if you don't currently hold a position.

4. A warning window will appear. Agree to the terms regarding CFD trading. Click the checkbox and then click Continue.

5. A "Congratulations!" message will appear. Click Transfer to move funds from your Spot account to your TradFi account.

6. Enter the amount you wish to transfer or click the All button, then click Confirm.

7. Once the funds are transferred, the amount available for trading will be displayed in Free Margin. Order Value shows the maximum amount you can order. If you set the ratio using the slider, the margin amount to be used will be displayed on the Buy (Long) button. Clicking it will execute a market order.

8. Once the order is placed, a notification saying "Order Filled XTIUSD" will appear.

Creating a Gate Wallet Web3 Wallet

Here, I will explain how to use the Gate Wallet without using another wallet.

Open the Gate App and scan the QR code.

Once scanned, you will be redirected to the Gate Wallet.

Click 'Create Wallet'.

Clicking 'Create Now' immediately opens a personal wallet. However, to use it properly, you need the recovery phrase. You can choose Cloud Backup or Manual Backup. I will try Manual Backup.

Recovery Phrase Security Guide:

1. Do not record or take a photo of it.
2. Do not screenshot or copy and save it.
3. The person who holds the recovery phrase is the owner of the wallet.

Please press 'Got it' three times.

When a screen like the one above appears, the 12 words of the recovery phrase will be shown. Please write them down in a notepad or similar place, viewable only offline, and keep them safe. If you lose it, recovery is impossible. Tapping the screen will reveal the 12 words.

Once you solve a short quiz to confirm you've checked the words, the backup is complete.

Depositing to the Wallet

Now, you need to deposit funds to trade. Clicking 'Deposit' or 'Receive' on the wallet's main screen will show a screen like the one on the right.

Since buying coins with a Korean card is impossible, skip 'Buy' and click 'Withdraw from Exchange' or 'Receive'.

The former is the method of transferring funds from Gate's CEX exchange if you already have funds there, and 'Receive' is the method of moving funds from another exchange wallet or personal wallet, etc.

Withdraw from Exchange

I chose the former because I was already using Gate.

The transfer process is the same as the deposit/withdrawal method for a regular exchange. Select the network, set the amount to transfer, and click 'Withdraw'.

Receive

Clicking 'Receive', the latter option, is the same. Select the coin to transfer, choose the network, copy the displayed wallet address, and paste it into the exchange or wallet from which you will be transferring the funds.

How to Move to the DEX Exchange on PC / Mobile

On the PC web screen, you can move directly to the DEX exchange by clicking the place labeled 'Web3' at the top of the exchange.

In the mobile app, clicking the 'Exchange' section at the very top will show 'Exchange / Web3 / Pay'. You can switch using this.

How to Trade Perpetual Futures on Gate DEX

Clicking 'Perps' at the top will take you directly to the futures trading screen.

Transfer to Futures Wallet

First, you must transfer the money you just deposited to the futures wallet to enable futures trading.

If you look at the top right, clicking on the Wallet or the 'Available' arrow part will bring up the Transfer screen.

Futures Trading Method

If you have previously traded futures on Gate, you can use it the same way.

• These tokens use the BEP20 network, and fees are charged in the specific token units.

Even at VIP 0, you get a 10% discount. In the case of VIP 10, Maker fees are free, and Taker fees are around 0.058%, which is a very low rate.

Since a single Binance BNB is already priced around $1,200–$1,300, you can receive VIP benefits and reduce trading fees with a much smaller investment compared to the required holdings of other platforms.

However, while holding GT tokens does not provide direct fee benefits for futures trading, VIP benefits are still applied to futures, resulting in reduced fees.

Margin Mode (마진 모드) Cross / Isolated

레버리지 스위칭(변경)은 현재 계약에만 적용됩니다.

Cross(교차 마진)

교차 마진 모드에서는 계정 전체 잔액이 증거금으로 사용됩니다. 청산 시 계정의 모든 잔액을 잃을 수도 있습니다. 선물지갑내에 있는 모든 돈을 끌어다가 포지션을 지키는 용도로 사용합니다.

Isolated(격리 마진)

격리 마진 모드에서는 해당 포지션에 할당된 증거금만 사용됩니다. 청산 시 손실은 그 할당된 금액으로 제한됩니다. 포지션 금액만 청산되는 형태입니다.

이 모드에서는 포지션별로 증거금을 조정할 수도 있습니다.

Adjust Leverage (레버리지 조정)

현재의 레버리지는 10배로 설정되어있는데요. 이는 기본 설정입니다. 레버리지 배율에 따라서 수익률이 달라지는데, 보통 50배 100배씩 하는 고배율은 쉽게 청산될 수 있기 때문에 보통 크로스 모드로 사용합니다. 비트코인의 경우 최대 125배까지 가능합니다.

주의 문구: 레버리지가 10배를 초과할 경우, 작은 가격 변동에도 청산이 발생할 수 있습니다.

Contract Unit Settings (계약 단위 설정)

Amount (BTC)

입력한 값은 주문의 BTC 수량입니다. 즉 내가 입력하는 게 비트코인 갯수로 설정하여 거래하는 형식입니다. 익숙하지 않다면 추천하지 않습니다.

Value (USDT)

입력한 값은 주문의 시장 가치이며, 레버리지에 따라 증거금이 달라집니다.

예를 들어서 내가 밸류로 세팅하고 1000을 적었다면, 레버리지가 10배일때는 증거금은 100USDT만 사용된다는 의미입니다. 레버리지가 100배라면 10USDT만 사용되는 형식입니다.

즉 내가 총 거래하고 싶은 포지션의 거래액수를 직접 적는 형식입니다.

Cost (USDT)

입력한 값은 주문의 비용이며, 레버리지와 관계없이 증거금은 동일하게 유지됩니다.

예를 들면 내가 1000USDT를 적었을 경우 내 증거금 1000USDT가 사용됩니다. 레버리지가 10배라면 1만달러어치 포지션이며, 레버리지가 100배라면 10만달러어치 포지션이 잡히게 됩니다.

Amount (Contracts)

입력한 값은 주문의 계약 수량입니다. 코인만 거래하는 형식에서는 일반적으로는 잘 사용하지 않는데, CFD나 해외선물거래를 하는 분들에게 익숙한 단위입니다.

1계약은 보통 1BTC의 가격입니다. 즉 현재 가격이 12만 달러라면 1계약은 12만달러입니다.

가장 높은 매수호가에 매수하거나, 가장 낮은 매도호가에 매도합니다.

BBO 사용 시, 시스템은 주문 가격을 오더북 내 가장 정밀한 호가 수준에 맞게 자동 조정하고 지정가 주문을 배치합니다.

해당 기능은 슬리피지나 극심한 변동성이 있을 때 사용하는데요. 거래량이 적을 때 특히 유용합니다.

Order Type (주문 유형)

Basic (기본, 가장 많이 사용됨)

• Limit (지정가): 지정된 가격 또는 더 좋은 가격으로 매수·매도합니다.
• Market (시장가): 현재 시장에서 가장 좋은 가격으로 즉시 매수·매도합니다.

• TWAP: 일정한 간격으로 주문을 자동 실행합니다.
